Hosted by the James Beard Award-winning chef himself alongside radio icon Angela Yee of Power 105.1, this autumn celebration is all about warming up the season with endless drinks, dance moves, fiery barbecues, and drool-worthy eats starting at 4:30pm on Saturday October 18, 2025 at the stunning Inside Park.

Chef JJ Johnson is a James Beard Award–winning chef, TV personality, author, and cultural tastemaker celebrated for redefining Afro-Caribbean and global Black cuisines through a modern lens. He is the founder of FIELDTRIP, a community-focused rice bowl shop, a founding partner of WONDER (Marc Lore's delivery-first food platform) and currently serves as the Creative Culinary Director for the Blue Llama Jazz Club in Ann Arbor.
JJ also hosts Cleo TV's "Just Eats with Chef JJ," now in its fifth season, and has made appearances on shows such as "Selena + Chef," Netflix’s "Street Food," and the Food Network. His debut cookbook, "Between Harlem and Heaven," earned the James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook, and his second book, "The Simple Art of Rice," was recognized as one of The New York Times' Best Cookbooks of 2023.
Outside the kitchen, JJ is committed to social impact, working with organizations like Rethink Food and Friends of the Children to tackle issues like hunger, sustainability, and youth mentorship. His influence has earned him numerous honors from the James Beard Foundation, Esquire, the National Restaurant Association Power List, Eater's New Guard, Forbes 30 Under 30, and Zagat's 30 Under 30.
Enter The Cookout, a cultural spectacular that brings the unmistakable energy and soul of Black cookouts to the heart of The Big Apple. Set to take place within the gorgeous indoor & outdoor spaces at Inside Park, this extravaganza is a tribute to community, flavor, and heritage. Hosted by Chef JJ and radio queen Angela Yee, you'll experience a Saturday filled with culinary innovation, where some of the city’s top chefs serve up bold, mouth-watering dishes inspired by Afro-Caribbean and global Black cuisines.
Blending food, music, and purpose, the event also features live music to keep the vibe high and the dance floor grooving. Beyond the entertainment, The Cookout partners with Rethink Food, a nonprofit tackling food insecurity and waste across the city.
