Art Laboratory is part sip hideaway, part contemporary gallery, part neighborhood gem and now, it’s bringing that same effortlessly cool energy to weekends with a brunch made for long afternoons, endlessly-filled glasses, and drool-worthy eats. Come hungry. The Art Lab Salmon Toast & Eggs piles toasted bread with avocado, cream cheese, cured salmon and tomato alongside two eggs, while the Nutella & Banana Blini goes unapologetically sweet with two delicate blini, fresh banana and plenty of Nutella. Then there are the pizzas: blistered, Neapolitan-style pies made for ripping, sharing and inevitably stealing the last slice. The Burrata or Prosciutto are favorites.
And because this is brunch in the East Village, there should probably be bubbles involved. Add 90 minutes of Bottomless Mimosas & Bellinis, then settle in and let the day unfold at its own pace. New to the East Village, Art Laboratory is a wine haven and cultural hub built around three things that tend to make a very good night: wine, art and community. Hidden away on Avenue B, the concept brings thoughtfully selected wines, food and contemporary art together under one roof, with exhibitions, tastings and creative events designed to make the space feel more like a neighborhood salon than a conventional restaurant.
The concept is the work of Georgian-born visual artist Giorgi Togonidze, who recently featured textured reliefs, metallic patinas, and décor work at The History Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. Add in the a DJ set, and you have art by way of your eyes and ears that lends to the brilliance of what your taste buds are about to experience.
Art is more than décor here. Art Laboratory's concept was inspired by the connection between wine and creativity, with rotating exhibitions helping transform the room and give repeat visits something new to discover. The wine program follows the same exploratory spirit, reaching across Italy, France, Spain, the United States and beyond, while the kitchen leans into food that wants to be shared, particularly their famed Neapolitan-style pizzas.
And the setting fits the concept beautifully. Tucked into Avenue B in the East Village, the approximately 1,500-square-foot space pairs a stunning bar with contemporary artwork, rich wood, warm lighting and chic feels. It's polished without losing the neighborhood's downtown edge.
This is the sort of place that works equally well for a first date, a bottle with friends, or, now, a leisurely brunch fuelled by bubbling pizza and bottomless sips...
