Commence your culinary adventure with the Tartare de Thon Frais (Tuna Tartare served with avocado, cucumber and sesame seed). For entrees, the Rack of Lamb (pomme puree, asparagus, lamb jus) is a house specialty; thick and filling, yet tender and flavorful.
After sharing an authentic French, homemade dessert and finishing off your bottle of wine, it's time to head downstairs to Maman & Mimi Sous-Sol - a speakeasy lounge boasting cozy booths, international DJs & French cocktails.
Your feast may have ended, but your night of discovery has only just begun...
Jacques Ouari, French restaurateur extraordinaire whose hits over the past 20+ years include Upper East Side mainstay Jacques Brasserie, returns downtown with Maman & Mimi - the respective nicknames of his grandmother & grandfather.
The outside of the restaurant may give the illusion that the décor will be French, but it’s actually quite eclectic: bar stools are backed with plaid fabric, fringed chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and brown leather booths line the walls.
The menu however - rich in imported Berber spices, French cheeses, organic meats and fresh, seasonal produce - is very French.
From the Steak Frites (black angus beef, sauce au poivre) and the crispy Chicken Tajin in a rich stew of chickpeas and olives, to the Moules Frites (PE Island mussels) served with your choice of Marinières, Provençale, or Dijonnaise sauces, the restaurant's menu deftly balances nouvelle cuisine with sophisticated French classics.
The Branzino (fillet, pan served) comes stacked with vegetables with a finishing touch of chorizo sauce. No matter which entree you pick, do leave room for dessert - the Crème Brûlée begs to be cracked open and is simply, magnifique.
The brasserie mirrors, mosaic floors and crimson wallpaper make for an evocative setting as vivid as the food itself. Or choose an al fresco table along Prince Street for a magical night under the stars...
