Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Chef Chikara Sono worked as an automobile engineer in Sapporo and washing dishes part‑time at a high‑end Japanese restaurant before moving to New York City, where he honed his craft. In 2007, he became Executive Chef at the East Village’s Kyo Ya, where his mastery earned the restaurant a coveted Michelin star and a glowing three‑star review from The New York Times.
After leading Kyo Ya for 12 years, Sono ventured into opening his own gems, including BBF and the intimate 12‑seat counter “kappo” restaurant, Kappo Sono near Union Square. Such talent is best showcased when you sit back, relaxm and relish every bite, letting Chef Sono draw on the artistry and seasonality that have defined his Michelin‑star status and international acclaim.
