Project Farmhouse
76 E 13th Street
For 45 years, environmental non-profit GrowNYC has been working alongside residents to transform communities and empower residents to make our city clean, healthy and sustainable. The first Greenmarket opened in 1976 and since then, the organization has been operating the largest open air farmers' market in the country, building and maintaining community and school gardens, offering hands-on education for all ages, and running a citywide recycling outreach program. Project Farmhouse grew out of the idea of creating a central location where New Yorkers of all stripes can get closer, to our food, to the land and to our neighbors. Despite being the largest city in the U.S., New York does not have a center for environmental issues– such as we do for photography, or cultural heritage or art. As the impacts of climate change are apparent, a need for an international center for learning, discussion and action is critical.
