The decor at Shirokuro transforms the entire space into a hand-drawn, black-and-white sketch brought to life. Every surface, from the walls to the floor, has been meticulously illustrated by hand, creating the illusion of depth and texture without the use of color or printed materials. Expect a surreal, immersive environment where tables, chairs, and objects appear to leap off the page.
The menu is hyper-seasonal, meaning each day brings fresh catches flown in daily from Japan's famed Tsukiji Market, or sourced locally for peak flavor. After a few sublime starters, you'll dive into sumptuously warming miso soup, a chef's selection of appetizers, nigiri the likes of uni, yellowtail, fatty tuna belly, masago, snapper & then some dressed with everything from caviar to truffle, and everything in between, as well as a hand roll to hit the spot!
You're at the behest of Master Sushi Chef Hiroji Sawatari, whose flair for the creative and extensive knowledge & training will result in a feast you won't soon forget - especially with a few cocktails and glasses of wine to sip while you savor...
At Shirokuro, the goal was not merely to create a traditional Japanese omakase restaurant. The vision extended further, to craft a space where art and cuisine converge in a living, breathing sketchbook. Inspired by the precision and emotion of hand-drawn artwork, the team made a deliberate choice to forgo wallpaper and printed graphics, opting instead to hand-draw every single line by hand.
Such an inventive design has earned the attention of The New York Times & Time Out. Hand-painted by artist and art director Mirim Yoo over the course of three months, every detail in the space, from the bonsai trees to the lines that make the tables and chairs appear to leap from the pages of a book, was meticulously brought to life.
Shirokuro was designed to feel like a living, hand-drawn artwork, where every element is crafted with intention and without shortcuts. Instead of relying on wallpaper or printed graphics, the artist rendered every detail by hand, even sketching the floor to resemble the natural grain of wooden slabs.
Along the walls, scenes inspired by Japan come to life in striking black and white. Below the liquor shelf, stacks of illustrated bowls sit beside delicately drawn ikebana arrangements and sheathed samurai swords. All of it appears almost three-dimensional, blurring the line between sketch and reality.
Aside from the visual brilliance, culinary mastery is at the hands of Master Sushi Chef Hiroji Sawatari. With over two decades of experience specializing in Edomae-style omakase, he is celebrated for precision knife work, refined flavor balance, and delivering exceptional dining experiences. His resume includes 2 Michelin Starred Sushi Yasuda, Sushi Ann, Shigure, Sushi Seki, Sen, Nico, and time at Morimoto under acclaimed Iron Chef Morimoto.
The palatable delicacies, sublime drinks program with craft cocktails, fine sake, and curated wines, as well as the Instagramable scene that surrounds you will make a night at this treasure unforgettable in every way...
