This dinner for two keeps things beautifully simple. Think wood-fired pizzas, picking your pies from Via 13’s Italian lineup, where the Queen Margherita goes classic with fior di latte, tomato, pecorino & basil. The Diavola 2.0 turns up the heat with ’nduja, salame & cool stracciatella, or go all-out with the Tartufo Royale, layered with four cheeses, 24-month Prosciutto di Parma & black truffle.
Then comes the important question: how do you spritz? Choose two from Aperol, Hugo, Italicus & Rosemary, Campari, Almond, or Sorrento. Go bittersweet and orange-hued, fresh and floral, or herbaceous and aromatic, then raise a glass while the oven works its magic. Via 13 feels right at home on West 13th Street, occupying a historic brownstone on one of those leafy West Village blocks that seems almost suspiciously good at being New York. Formerly Sotto 13, the restaurant has since had a glow-up, emerging as a sharper, sexier take on contemporary Italian dining.
Come after dark and the room does much of the flirting for you. Plush curved banquettes and deep jewel tones sit against industrial details, while the restaurant’s showstopping skylight turns from sun-drenched by day to wonderfully moody at night. At the back, a gleaming copper-clad oven flickers away like the world’s chicest fireplace. And when the weather cooperates, the brownstone patio is prime West Village real estate.
Keep an eye on that copper oven, because pizza is very much a main character here. Via 13 moves effortlessly from Italian classics to more decadent creations. The Rustica Fumé pairs rosemary potatoes with smoked mozzarella, the Bosco Piccante brings porcini, Taleggio and hot honey into the same delicious orbit, and the Tartufo Royale goes gloriously overboard with four cheeses, black truffle and 24-month Prosciutto di Parma.
