The newest restaurant from the masterminds behind Chelsea cult hit Serenata, El Gallo de Oro offers elevated Mexican cuisine, an outstanding cocktail program and the neighborly charm of the West Village.
Past the lovely outdoor patio, the dining room evokes the fashionable Condesa district in Mexico City with copper pendant lighting, rustic wooden tables, and a wall art of reclaimed metal pans and lids, reminiscent of the ancient Mayan solar motif.
Start with the fresh Tuna Ceviche (tomato, corn nuts, fresh lime) or the comforting Pozole Blanco, a hearty stew of creamy hominy and shredded white chicken, served with tostadas and crisp radishes to be stirred in before you eat.
Executive Chef Alban Laci offers a dazzling array of Tacos and Quesadillas in the next course. The Pescado Frito Taco is a clear winner made with crispy sea bass, pickled onions, and creamy chili lime sauce.
