Join Earth Day New York, in partnership with The City of New York, today as they host a public celebration in Times Square on Earth Day.The celebration will be a three-hour show with environmental activists, business leaders, government officials and entertainers – all of whom are committed to protecting the Earth. They will all take to the stage on Broadway between 45 and 46th Streets. Mayor Michael Bloomberg will make his official Earth Day announcement at the event around midday. In addition, to Mayor Bloomberg, other prominent environmentalists that will taking the stage include: Speaker Christine Quinn , Denis Hayes, Matthew Modine of Bicycle for a Day, Dan Reicher of Google, Alex Matheissen of Riverkeeper and many other notable environmental leaders. The three hour event will also feature Vice President Gore and Wangari Maathai, both sharing their Earth Day messages virtually on the screens in Times Square. Entertainment highlights of the festivities will be a live performance by Salman Ahmad and Junoon and a performance by the legendary reggae band, The Wailers.

Confirmed speakers and entertainers include: Denis Hayes, Honorary Chair of Earth Day Network, Maya Lin who is releasing her multi-media work on extinction called “What is Missing?”; Gail Cunningham, Keep America Beautiful (KAB); Caressa Cameron, Miss America; Matt McKenna; KAB president/CEO and Barry Caldwell, KAB chairman; Lisa Young, Dept. of Interior – President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA); Mandy Gonzalez, Elphaba from Wicked; Aisha Tyler – actress/comedienne ; J. Xavier – singer/performance “Green Starts Here”; Dan Reicher – Google; Blue Man Group + PSA; The Honorable Mayor Bloomberg ; Vice President Al Gore (video message) ; The Wailers; The cast from the Broadway show Hair; Yoland Trevino, Global Council Chair of the United Religions Initiative; Wangari Maathai (video message) and a special performance by Salman Ahmad and Junoon, who have reunited to perform for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
