On Sunday, September 20th, Artichoke Dance Company will host the third annual EcoArts Festival on Governors Island. In collaboration with Governors Island local organizations, the festival brings artists of all mediums together to creatively reflect on climate change and the environment while envisioning future paths forward. The festival is a day full of eco-inspired performances, visual art, and participatory activities on Governors Island that are free and open to the public and as an official event of Climate Week NYC.

The festival will be held in and around the Climate Imaginarium (406A Comfort Road on Colonels Row at Governors Island). Guests attending the festival can access the ferry every 15 minutes at 10 South Street in Manhattan, or hourly at Red Hook/Atlantic Basin and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Ferry tickets can be purchased round-trip for $5 online or at the ferry terminal. More information on how to get to Governors Island can be found here.

On the lawn, workshops and interactive activities are held from 11:00am-4:00pm. “Ghost Tide to Living Waters” with artist January Yoon Cho will encourage attendees to participate in an installation focusing on endangered aquatic animals for the duration of the festival. From 11:00am-2:00pm, there will be a paper making workshop with Rejin Leys. Samuel Ezra Fisch will present “Good Grub”, a mock catering performance that serves hors d'oeuvres featuring edible bugs from 12:30-3:00pm. The final workshop will be a recycled fabric activity from 2:00-4:00pm with Inez Devereaux.

There will be featured performances at the EcoArts Festival as well, showcasing the following groups: Rulan Tangen’s Dancing Earth (Bodies of Water/Earth/Air), Artichoke Dance Company (Within the Waters), Kristen Klein’s Inclined Dance Project (Vista), and Vannia Ibarguen’s VIDA Dance Arts (Daughter of the Lake/Haja de la Laguna). The performances run from 12:45-2:00pm (45 minutes each), with a multi-site performance intervention with Dancing Earth from 1:30-2:00pm.

Amongst the workshops, interactive activities, and dance performances, three featured visual artists’ works will be on display at the Climate Imaginarium for the duration of the festival. Artists Traci Johnson (Sculpture: Remember My Compass Star), Katie Pell (Installation: Super Fun Site), and S Emsaki (Installation: Postcards from the Atlantic) will be featured, and their work will be displayed through the end of October on Governors Island.

Attending the EcoArts Festival is free; registration and donations are encouraged, which can be found through this link
