It's probably not what you're craving in this weather, but New Yorkers have a new place to get their Italian ice fix. The city is getting its first Rita's this Valentine's Day, located on the Upper West Side (2486 Broadway). The store is owned by franchisees Joshua and Noah Teitelbaum, brothers who got to know the Pennsylvania-based chain while studying at Penn State.
Reportedly the largest Italian ice chain in the country, Rita's will get two more locations in Manhattan next year -- one on the Upper East Side and the other in Murray Hill -- also run by the Teitelbaum brothers. Customers who attend opening day this Sunday will receive a free regular-sized ice and, if that isn't enough incentive to taste a frozen treat when it's freezing outside, the first 100 will get free ices for a year.
