Pick your pies from Via 13’s tempting lineup, which runs from the classic Queen Margherita with fior di latte, tomato, pecorino & basil to the decadent Tartufo Royale piled with four cheeses, aged Prosciutto di Parma & black truffle. Feeling spicy? The Diavola 2.0 brings ‘nduja, salame & stracciatella, while the Carbonara turns the Roman pasta favorite into pizza with creamy egg, Pecorino, black pepper & crispy guanciale.
Then, naturally, spritz happens. Each of you gets your pick from six Italian-inspired pours. Go for the bittersweet orange Aperol, floral and refreshing Hugo, herbaceous Italicus & Rosemary, boldly bitter Campari, or the Almond and Sorrento. There’s a new chapter unfolding at Via 13, the contemporary Italian restaurant tucked inside a historic brownstone in the West Village. Formerly known as Sotto 13, the longtime neighborhood spot has been renovated, reimagined, and reenergized with a new identity built around what the team calls the “essence of Italy today,” aka authentic Italian flavors and warm hospitality, but with enough modern creativity to keep things interesting.
Step inside and it’s easy to forget you’re in Manhattan. The expansive dining room mixes industrial details with rich, contemporary finishes, while overhead greenery and a dramatic skylight flood the space with natural light. At the heart of it all, the glowing copper-clad oven provides both a focal point and the firepower behind those beautifully blistered pizzas. Outside, a charming street-side patio tucked against the brownstone dishes up prime people-watching territory.
In the kitchen, the philosophy is decidedly Italian without being stuck in the past. The menu leans into quality Italian ingredients and recognizable regional flavors, then gives them a Via 13 twist. Think 24-month Parmigiano, Prosciutto di Parma, Calabrian ’nduja, black truffle, Pecorino Romano DOP, Provolone del Monaco and fresh stracciatella. It's a menu designed to travel around Italy without leaving 13th Street.
That evolution from Sotto 13 to Via 13 is less reinvention for reinvention’s sake and more of a nuovo capitolo. The restaurant has kept the conviviality and neighborhood appeal of its predecessor while sharpening the look, menu and point of view for a more contemporary Italian experience. It’s polished without feeling precious, stylish without trying too hard, and transportive in exactly the right way.
