Bring your favorite dinner date (or the friend who never says no to another round) for Steak Frites repping an 8oz grilled flat iron steak, crispy golden fries and silky au poivre sauce. It’s unapologetically classic, exactly what you want alongside a bottle of red, and the sort of plate that belongs in a tavern with dim lights and a well-stocked bar.
There’s plenty more comfort-food temptation. The Black Market Burger stacks a prime beef patty with bacon marmalade, IPA-pickled onions and mustard aioli, while Chicken Parm Pasta combines mozzarella, Parmesan and tomato marmalade over penne. You’ll also find Grandma’s Meatball Sub with tomato gravy and whipped ricotta, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Fish & Chips, and a Fried Chicken Sandwich loaded with cabbage slaw, pickles and chipotle aioli.
Then choose your drinking strategy. The Broadway Tavern feels like the sort of neighborhood bar New York used to produce effortlessly. Tucked into Broadway, the room is all cozy wood, exposed textures, hanging lights and that unmistakable lived-in Manhattan tavern energy, casual enough for a burger at the bar, but atmospheric enough to settle into for dinner and a bottle of wine.
And while it sits well above the city's usual restaurant-hopping zones, that’s part of the charm. Head west and you’re close to the Hudson River and the waterfront greenway, giving dinner here a completely different rhythm from the downtown routine. Think a sunset walk along the water followed by steak, cocktails and a booth in an old-school Upper Manhattan tavern. Think a low-key Manhattan evening that's increasingly hard to find.
The food follows the same old-New-York-with-new-ideas formula. Tavern staples get smart little upgrades throughout the menu. Bacon marmalade and IPA-pickled onions on the Black Market Burger, tomato marmalade on the Chicken Parm, whipped ricotta with Grandma’s Meatball Sub, and Nashville-hot seasoning on the popcorn chicken.
