Think homemade pastas, succulent meats, fresh seafood, inventive cocktails and sumptuous wine, all of which have been perfected over three generations. The room now matches the ambition: retro charm dialed up with a chic, elegant refresh, cozy booths inside for old-school hush, and a brand-new streetside setup for people-watching Gramercy's best.
Start things off with the Calamari Fritti, crispy, golden, classic, served with a marinara. Move on to mains like the Linguine Alle Vongole repping little neck clams in white wine, garlic, and olive oil. Of course, you have to try the Bistecca Alla Pizzaiola, a black Angus NY strip smothered in peppers, mushrooms, and marinara, or the Filetto Di Salmone Con Asparagi that pairs salmon with asparagus and sun-dried tomatoes in a mustard cream sauce. And if you came for one thing and one thing only, it's the famous Chicken Parm.

Some restaurants serve food. Paul & Jimmy's serves history, and since 1950, they've been doing it on Irving Place without ever losing the plot. This is a Gramercy institution in the truest sense. We're talking a generational establishment with a commitment to Southern Italian cooking that hasn't wavered since Cosmo Azzollini first waited tables here before buying the place outright in 1968.
The kitchen still belongs to Executive Chef Greg Azzollini, the third generation to take up the culinary mantle, and his résumé reads like a love letter to Italian cooking. Think culinary school at the Institute of Culinary Education, a stint at Lupa Osteria, and further training in Italy before coming home. The result is old-world Southern Italian food made with delish delights like mozzarella made fresh daily and pasta made in-house every day — including several recipes revived from a handwritten cookbook dating back to the restaurant's earliest days, uncovered during a recent renovation.
Vinny and Melanie Russo, who trace their own roots to Naples, had been regulars at Paul & Jimmy's since 2003 before they fell hard enough for the place to buy it themselves. The retro DNA is still there in the warm lighting, cozy booths, and old-school Italian charm, but it's been given a chic, upgraded finish that reads fresh without erasing seventy-five years of memory. A new sidewalk cafe out front lets you soak up Gramercy's energy while you eat, giving the whole experience a second gear. "Excellent neighborhood spot. Friendly and accommodating staff (shout out to Fernando!). Love the outdoor seating area to enjoy a few drinks and eats. Food was delicious! Had the burrata and beet appetizer, the vodka rigatoni made spicy (pasta was cooked perfectly and loved that it wasn’t swimming in sauce) and that tiramisu…WOW! Will def make this a frequent spot!"
