Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument
The Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument located at 89th Street and Riverside Drive in Riverside Park in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, commemorates Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the American Civil War. This temple-like monument located on a promontory along Riverside Drive at West 89th Street commemorates Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. An elegant example of the City Beautiful movement, it was designed by the Stoughton brothers, engineer Charles W. (1860–1944) and architect Arthur A. Stoughton (1867–1955), who won a public competition with a design inspired by Greek antiquity. It was designated a municipal landmark in 1976.
