Santos Anne
366 Union Avenue | (718) 486-6979
It seems that Santos Anne has found the right recipe for this seemingly doomed location, formerly Elote and Santa Fe before that. Its newest incarnation focuses on creating a fun, festive atmosphere, with bright colored paint, pillow-topped benches, and newspaper-plastered walls. Owner/chef Lorenzo Gantonio (who also owns nearby crepe café Pâtes et Traditions) is also a musician and hosts live music every night (except “Mystic Mondays,” when free tarot-card readings entertain diners and drinkers alike). Outside, a pétanque court sits under a wisteria arbiter surrounded by numerous picnic tables. Complimentary chips and mild salsa can be augmented by delicious chunky guacamole. Or start with a taste of Santos Anne’s French influence with the octopus ceviche Provençale or the assorted pâté plate. Double-wrapped tacos are small, though generously filled with anything from basic carnitas to an interesting combination of duck, goat cheese, and arugula. The brochette skewers alternate between large cubes of tasty medium-rare hanger steak or (pork) and marinated peppers and is served with fries and salad.
