Nail + Spa Sakura
35 E 1st Street | 212-387-9161
Named after the Japanese word for cherry blossom, Sakura brings intricate nail art and attentive service to the mani-pedi-packed Upper East Side. After opening three nail salons in Japan, sisters Yumiko and Fumiko Kano launched their first stateside location in April 2007, presenting ecoconscious offerings like the Ultimate Organic Mani-Pedi, which features nontoxic polish by Priti and a hand massage using Pangea Organics lotion. With four manicure stations and three pedicure stations, the salon offers a cozier experience than many of its nearby competitors (two other salons within two blocks) due to its unhurried, meticulous staff. The space was renovated in December 2008, outfitted with jade-green walls, wooden pedicure bowls, and dainty floral accents. Eighty percent of the salon’s business comes from Calgel nails—a strengthening, painted-on synthetic application that lasts a month—including 31 colors and artistic add-ons ranging from gradation to rhinestones to glitter finishes. But the specialty here is nail art designs, with several trays of stencils available or the option of bringing your own drawing for inspiration.
