Barbaco Tio
We are a group of restaurateurs who fell in love with the flavors of slow-cooked lamb barbacoa and fresh tortillas. The goal was to bring this traditional food from Mexico to Brooklyn. We also wanted to share the typical family-style service with which Mexican families enjoy barbacoa on the weekends, with each person scooping the tender shredded meat into fresh tortillas and dressing it to their liking with flavorful salsas, fresh cilantro, onions, limes, and slightly pickled rajas and nopales.
We built a menu around this experience to offer other slow-cooked delicacies served in the same style—lamb Pancita, chicken barbacoa, and cabeza. All these proteins are served by the kilo and paired with consomés made from the broth produced by the cooking process.
We expanded the menu to include options for individuals who want to enjoy the flavors outside of the more time-consuming full meal for a group. So burritos, tortas, picaditas, and quesadillas were born using the same meats we offer by the kilo for a more uniquely American experience while staying true to Mexican flavors and ingredients.
We worked with a local artist to create a vibrant space that reflects the colors, energy, and vibrancy of Mexico City. We also put our masa and tortilla-making process in our entrance so people could see and smell the freshness and authenticity of the product as soon as they walked in. We will serve our food and drinks from the spacious front patio in the warmer months.
