Before “competitive socializing” became a nightlife buzzword, SPIN was already doing it in New York. The story began in 2007, when best friends Jonathan Bricklin and Franck Raharinosy started hosting weekly ping pong parties in a Tribeca loft while attempting to get good enough to chase an Olympic dream. Artists, musicians, bankers and serious players started showing up, the parties grew, and by summer 2009 the founders — alongside Andrew Gordon — turned that unlikely scene into SPIN’s first permanent club in New York.
The concept gained an instant shot of star power through Susan Sarandon, an early partner whose love of table tennis helped put SPIN firmly on the cultural map. Over the years, the brand has attracted everyone from downtown creatives to A-listers, with names including Justin Bieber, Scarlett Johansson, Billie Eilish, 50 Cent and Kim Kardashian associated with the Flatiron scene. SPIN has also found its way into the pages of The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Vogue.
Today, the Flatiron flagship stretches across roughly 14,000 square feet, with 18 Olympic-grade tables, a full cocktail bar, oversized communal seating and artwork from established and local artists woven throughout the space. It feels part nightclub, part contemporary art space and part wildly upgraded rec room. Think dramatic lighting, bold murals and playful installations replacing the fluorescent-basement image most people associate with ping pong.
