The November elections will have a critical impact on the lives of millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (L.G.B.T.) Americans. Same-sex marriage initiatives are on the ballot in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington and federal challenges to California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act are headed to the Supreme Court. New York Times editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal discusses strategies and prospects for these and other gay rights issues with Times Op-Ed columnist Frank Bruni, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, whose support helped ensure passage of same-sex marriage in New York State and the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” and Theodore B. Olson, lead co-counsel in the federal challenge to California’s Proposition 8.
