Though Hans Christian Andersen is today known mostly for his fairy tales, his debut novel The Improvisatore initially was an even greater success when it was published in 1835. Inspired by Andersen's own travels in Italy, this bildungsroman is about one Antoni who rises from a pauper to a successful artist.
