While the current generation may know skeet and clay shooting best from hours spent in front of Duck Hunt on the old 8-bit NES, the sport has an old and august tradition behind it. So does Orvis Sandanona, the oldest permitted shotgun club in the country, which traces its founding back to the Jefferson presidency.
The Millbrook campus of Sandanona is easily accessible—only 90 minutes outside Manhattan—but the rolling hills of the countryside feel like a world away from the city.
An hour-long lesson with a professional shooting instructor covers skeet shooting (precision, repeat target shooting of clay “pigeons,” or discs), sporting clays (shooting in different conditions over a course, what’s sometimes called “golf with a gun”), shooting games, and more!
