- An Opera Tribute to Paul Robeson

The New York Opera Society presents a concert tribute to Paul Robeson (1898-1976), one of America’s most powerful singers. A 20th-Century Renaissance man, he was internationally renowned as a singer, actor, writer, and political activist. The son of a former slave, Robeson championed the singing of African-American spirituals on the concert stage, and his concert programs ran the gamut from classical arias to folk songs from around the world.

His strong beliefs in social justice and the universality of man informed his choice of repertoire as a performer. He and his songs merge into an expression of the dignity and brotherhood of all mankind.
