In 1967, Mildred and Richard Loving could not legally be married in the state of Virginia as an interracial couple. They took on the state in court, eventually going to the Supreme Court. The case, Loving v. Virginia, overturned laws prohibiting interracial marriage, allowing the Lovings, and other couples nationwide, to finally marry. (The case was cited as precedent in the court case about same-sex marriage restrictions in 2015.) June 12th is celebrated as Loving Day, the day the Supreme Court ruled in the Lovings’ favor.
Come celebrate this day at Solar 1 on the East River. Free music and beer will be provided to get the party started. RSVP is required; $10 suggested donation.
